The COVID-19 outbreak has threatened the health and safety of millions of renters and apartment communities nationwide. As states lift stay-at-home directives and take a phased approach to reactivating local economies, apartment firms are mapping out steps to reopen their communities.
To help them do that, NMHC has compiled an overview of suggested apartment owner preparations and considerations. However, the broad array of company types, sizes and geographic locations that make up the apartment industry discourages a one-size-fits-all approach to planning, so companies will need to adapt these broad considerations for their operational models and footprints.
This is the first of two reopening documents that NMHC will publish. This one is focused on property level considerations. A separate document will address enterprise-level considerations.
NMHC stresses that this overview is not to be construed as legal or operational guidance. Instead, it is meant to be a starting point for your company-specific plan. We encourage firms to seek expert consultation in the development of their plans to ensure comprehensive coverage. Also, because this situation is evolving rapidly, the information in this document is the best available resources at the time of publication.
NMHC encourages firms to monitor our COVID-19 HUB, on a regular basis for the latest news on this outbreak. The HUB includes, among other things:
- COVID Industry News
- NMHC COVID Webinars addressing the topics in this guidance
- Additional Reopening Resources, including Legal Considerations
- NMHC’s COVID-Related Advocacy Efforts
- Legislative and Regulatory Responses to COVID
We also recommend firms sign up for NMHC’s Emergency Preparedness Listserv to both ask questions and learn from what other firms are sharing.
