In November 2011, NMHC/NAA working together with the Texas Apartment Association (TAA) and the San Antonio Apartment Association (SAAA) helped convince the San Antonio City Council to remove an onerous carbon monoxide detector provision from its adoption of the 2012 International Fire Code (IFC).
The provision would have required carbon monoxide detectors to be installed in 30,000 apartment homes and several hundred thousand single-family houses.
As part of that effort, NMHC/NAA, TAA and SAAA developed a one-page briefing document outlining the apartment industry’s concerns based on current statistics on carbon monoxide poisoning.
The carbon monoxide detector changes along with other important changes to both the IFC’s 2012 edition and the 2012 edition of the International Building Code will affect both future projects and existing buildings in areas where the 2012 editions have been or will be adopted. NMHC/NAA have prepared a document highlighting these important changes.
