Washington, D.C. — NMHC welcomes the Trump Administration's focus on the need for increased housing supply to create more affordability, as described in its January 20, 2025 memorandum. Given the decision to pause the imposition of tariffs on Canada and Mexico, we are hopeful that the administration will consider the impact that such tariffs could have on the cost of materials needed to build and rehabilitate housing. While we appreciate the critical importance of preventing the spread of the fentanyl epidemic, rental housing providers need access to essential construction materials that will help us build the 4.3 million apartments needed by 2035.
NMHC looks forward to continued collaboration with the Trump Administration on policies that foster housing affordability and expand housing opportunity for all Americans.
Based in Washington, D.C., the National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) is where rental housers and suppliers come together to help meet America’s housing needs by creating inclusive and resilient communities where people build their lives. We bring together the owners, managers, developers and suppliers who provide rental homes for 40 million Americans from every walk of life—including seniors, teachers, firefighters, healthcare workers, families with children and many others. NMHC provides a forum for leadership and advocacy that promotes thriving rental housing communities for all.
