Today, the NMHC Board of Directors named Sharon Wilson Géno as President during the 2023 Annual Meeting. As we say farewell to outgoing President Doug Bibby and hello to Sharon, here are a few words from each regarding this momentous occasion.
FROM THE DESK OF SHARON WILSON GÉNO
NMHC Members,
Hello! It’s great to be here. As I said in today’s press release, this is a unique moment in time. In my 30 years of working on housing issues, there has never been a time when housing was a priority issue. That’s why I’m elated to join this organization as we work to solve one of America’s most pressing issues—the decades-long housing supply shortage.
During my time as President-Elect, I’ve already begun working with the NMHC staff to tackle this and other critical issues impacting our industry. I’ve joined in conversations with operations and tech leaders during NMHC OPTECH; helped lead NMHC through affordability discussions with the White House; and networked with owners, developers and managers in various cities across the country. I’ve quickly learned there’s never a dull moment at NMHC.
As part of this transitionary period, I've also had the opportunity to shadow and learn from Doug. His lessons in leadership have been instrumental in my preparation for this role and I will be steadfast in continuing the important work he's championed during his time with NMHC.
Now, as I officially take on the role of President, I look forward to getting to know NMHC’s membership and partnering on the meaningful work that lies ahead.
For those onsite at our Annual Meeting, I hope you’ll stop me in the halls to say hello. And for those unable to join us, please don’t hesitate to reach out via email to introduce yourself.
Best,
Sharon Wilson Géno
NMHC President
FROM THE DESK OF DOUG BIBBY
NMHC Members,
It is with a heavy heart filled with gratitude that I say my final farewell. I have treasured the past 20+ at the helm of this tremendous organization—and I am so proud of all we have accomplished together.
Throughout my tenure I have witnessed our industry—and this organization—grow and mature into the diverse sector we know today. We have taken on critical issues such as housing affordability, technological disruption and diversity, equity and inclusion. Thanks to industry-wide collaboration and perseverance, we have managed to traverse each important issue that has come our way with an incredible level of empathy and expertise. I will certainly miss the spirit and heart of this industry.
But, just know that you are in extremely capable hands. Your new president, Sharon Wilson Géno, has an unmatched passion for housing and incredible industry know-how. I have no doubt that she will be a tenacious advocate for our industry and I look forward to cheering her on from the sidelines.
Warm Wishes,
Doug Bibby
Former NMHC President
