The International Code Council (ICC) has completed the final round of hearings on the 2024 Group A code editions and entered the final phase of code development on October 15. Work began on the next editions of the ICC national model building codes earlier this year and NMHC has been making the industry’s case for cost-effective and practical updates.
The ICC produces the most widely used family of codes and standards, which provide minimum requirements for all aspects of multifamily design and construction and often serve as the basis for state and local building codes. Hundreds of code change proposals were submitted to ICC this year and NMHC has been particularly focused on holding back potentially onerous provisions related to fire protection, building egress and accessibility. A summary of the industry’s priorities during this code cycle is available here.
ICC will complete the final stage of Group A development – the Online Governmental Consensus Vote – between October 15 and November 1. NMHC has prepared this Voting Guide to highlight our priorities for code officials and ICC voters, summarizing the hearing outcomes and providing our recommendations for the online vote. We encourage members to forward this document to your local building officials and ICC members ahead of the voting period and urge them to support our industry priorities.
NMHC will continue to actively participate in the ICC code development process to ensure that the unique needs of the multifamily industry are considered and that proposed changes do not unnecessarily undermine the affordability and availability of housing nationwide. More information about the 2024 ICC code cycle is available here.
