The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is leading efforts across the federal government to support vulnerable Afghans, particularly those who worked alongside Americans in Afghanistan.
DHS is looking to find available affordable housing units to accommodate these people throughout the U.S. See below for housing requirements and key information, as well as additional resources.
Core housing requirements:
- Affordable Housing units that are available immediately.
- Waiver of normal requirements like credit checks and background checks.
- Provide up to a 1-year lease.
- Units need to be in communities that have low skilled jobs available.
Other key info:
- These Afghans have been fully vetted from a medical and security perspective. They are also fully up to date on vaccines.
- In advance of arriving at the apartment unit, they will be connected with a resettlement NGO, funded by the State Department, to ensure they have wraparound support, including help getting their children in school, basic documents, accessing services.
- The federal government will provide rent assistance to the Afghans via the resettlement NGOs they fund and direct assistance to the Afghans.
