On February 6, NMHC led a coalition of real estate groups in sending a letter to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the White House Domestic Policy Council regarding the Temporary Halt in Residential Evictions To Prevent the Further Spread of COVID-19 (CDC Order).
This comes in response to last week’s formal CDC notice to extend the national eviction moratorium through March 31, 2021, which was issued following President Biden's January 20 directive to issue an extension. Although last week’s announcement set forth a straight extension of the current eviction moratorium, HUD, CDC and the White House are currently conducting an inter-agency process to consider if additional changes are necessary.
As part of our coalition letter, we stressed our continued concerns that the current approach to eviction moratoriums is failing to address the scope of damage in the housing sector and will not meet the needs of renters and housing providers. Specifically, we call out that the continuation of a broad federal eviction moratorium is not aligning with the scale and structure of rental assistance programs we are seeing emerge at the state and local level. Additionally, our letter includes recommendations regarding the CDC Order for policymakers to consider as they determine if changes to the current eviction moratorium are necessary.
