The Trump Administration and a bipartisan group of members of Congress and Senators met on April 16 to discuss coronavirus relief and our nation’s recovery. The task force, the Opening Up America Again Congressional Group, discussed the White House’s proposed plan of a phased approach for reopening states or counties following the coronavirus pandemic.
The group also explored various solutions for providing immediate relief – such as additional funding for the Paycheck Protection Program, ways to energize the economy and relief for small businesses.
Earlier in the week, President Trump also met with more than 200 business leaders to discuss the Administration’s plan to reopen the country. This group of bipartisan business leaders – which includes more than a dozen members of the real estate and construction industry, including many NMHC member firms – will advise the White House as the Great American Economic Revival Industry Group.
The recently released White House proposal to reopen the country provides guidance to governors to “determine their ability to reignite the economies in their respective states” and outlines a three-phase plan to do so for both employers and individuals. A copy of the Executive Summary, Work for America, A Framework for Re-Opening American, and Guidelines for Opening America Again,” can be found here.
As stated in the Executive Summary, the proposal is intended to “mitigate risk of resurgence” and “protect the most vulnerable” populations. Further, the proposal notes that it is “based on up-to-date data and readiness” and is “implementable on a statewide or county-by-county basis at the governors’ discretion.”
NMHC will be working with Administration officials, NMHC members and industry partners to identify the operational challenges that the apartment industry will face as we navigate the process for operating in this new normal environment.
