Given the political shifts over the last two years, nothing is certain about the upcoming elections. With a record number of Congressional retirements and Speaker Ryan (R-WI) departing, no one can predict the make-up of the Senate or the House after November 6.
While even the most educated political prognostications are only guesses, that has not stopped discussion about the upcoming mid-term elections and specifically the potential for a blue wave. It’s far too early for predictions, however most pundits believe that the Democrats will pick up seats in the House – whether they will have a majority is unclear. In the Senate, the political environment appears to favor Republicans retaining control as the GOP is defending just eight seats and the Democrats are defending 33 (10 of which are in states that President Trump carried in 2016).
NMHC PAC continues to focus on Senate and House races that are critical to the multifamily industry. Supporting candidates who are focused on our issues is an investment in our industry. NMHC PAC support is essential as we approach the midterms.
Regardless of whether Democrats or Republicans come out on top, it is clear that a mix of term limits, retirements and new members will most likely impact several Congressional committees. NMHC is already working to strengthen relationships with those Members of Congress that may step into Chairman or Ranking Member roles. For example, NMHC PAC is lending support to Congressman Joe Crowley (D-NY) – a key Democratic leader in the House - through an upcoming personal dollar event to be hosted by Julie Smith of Bozzuto and other industry leaders on June 20 in Washington, D.C.
Meeting regularly with lawmakers, the NMHC legislative team discusses critical issues that include tax reform implementation, fair housing, housing finance reform, energy, the environment, labor and a host of others.
Members who support the PAC are recognized at NMHC’s unparalleled networking opportunities. The benefits of supporting NMHC PAC include opportunities for our donors to gather at exclusive social events, meet prominent elected officials and be highlighted during annual NMHC meetings.
With your help, we have been able to increase not just our visibility, but also the level of understanding of the real estate industry, one member at a time.
