NMHC PAC will continue to closely monitor the campaign season as the next 60 days will represent what’s likely to be a historic scramble for control of the White House, Senate and the House of Representatives. In particular, polls in the presidential race have vaulted up and down in the past few months, from the post-convention bump Clinton and Trump received, to their now nearly level playing field before the first head-to-head presidential debate later this month.
As the Election Day approaches, NMHC PAC, which has been
involved in over 321 House and Senate campaigns, is looking to return and add
some new partners on pushing forward the issues that matter most to the multifamily
industry when the new 115th Congress convenes in 2017.
Ready, Set, Race to the Finish
Right now, control of the Senate is up for grabs and it’s anyone’s guess which
party will emerge as the victor come November 8. The Senate election map favors the Democrats overall this year
who are defending only 10 Democratic controlled seats, most of which are considered
solidly democrat. However, the GOP is facing a much larger hurdle as the party
is defending 24 seats with many considered toss ups at best.
Some political pundits were saying in August that the House appeared to be up for grabs as well, since the GOP nominee Donald Trump had polls showing him losing by 6 points or more in the general election. That kind of blowout at the presidential level could harm Republican turnout to such an extent that it also dooms them to defeat in the House.
But in the past several weeks, a Clinton landslide has looked much less likely. And with Trump catching up in the polls, congressional Republicans are breathing somewhat easier about winning reelection. The House, for now, looks likely to stay in GOP hands and Senate Republicans are feeling a bit more optimistic about holding on to their majority. Nevertheless, given the unpredictability of both candidates at the top of the tickets, history shows there's no anticipating all the ways late developments can impact the races.
That’s why NMHC will continue its strong PAC fundraising campaign through the 11th hour. With an election so unpredictable, it’s more important than ever that we have a strong PAC that allows us to play a role in ensuring that multifamily champions return to Capitol Hill and that we are well-positioned to handle any changes that may happen in November’s election.
