NMHC believes that a diverse, equitable and inclusive membership creates a productive market that benefits the rental housing industry and the communities we serve. The NMHC Membership Development Program is an important component of our market-driven approach.
Please note: The NMHC Membership Development Program is an application-only opportunity open only to new members. Availability is limited. NMHC reviews applications and makes selections in its sole discretion.
Who is eligible to apply?
- Companies that are majority owned/led by individuals who are members of a group specified in the NMHC Membership Development Program Application; AND
- Primarily finance, own, develop or manage rental housing communities OR
- Provide brokerage services primarily to the rental housing industry OR
- Provide legal, consulting or other business services primarily to the rental housing industry.
- Nonprofit rental housing providers.
- Nonprofit organizations that represent rental housing providers who are predominantly members of a group specified in the NMHC Membership Development Program Application.
- Nonprofit organizations dedicated to rental housing, impact investing or community development.
- Accredited, nonprofit academic programs with rental housing curricula and engage in rental housing research.
How are applications evaluated?
NMHC will consider each application individually and the combined applicant pool. NMHC will make selections to produce a diverse cohort that supports our mission. Factors considered include:
- An applicant organization’s demonstrated ability to benefit from and contribute to NMHC. Example materials/information that may be submitted to support an application include:
- Company resume,
- Number of years in the rental housing industry,
- Business growth over the last three years as measured by communities or units under ownership and/or management, revenue, employees, geographic locations served, products or services offered, and client relationships.
- Organization type
- Business line(s)
- Applicant organization’s leadership/ownership
What benefits will my company receive if our application is approved?
- Complimentary two-year NMHC Advisory Committee membership.
- A 50% discount on one year of regular membership dues following your two-year complimentary membership. Your firm must renew within 6 months of your complimentary membership expiration date to use this discount.
- Participation in our new ambassador initiative during your two-year complimentary membership period. The ambassador initiative is specifically designed to help you benefit from NMHC’s many opportunities and foster active engagement. Your dedicated Ambassador will be a veteran NMHC member volunteer who will answer your questions, share their experiences and support your engagement.
- In-person and virtual networking opportunities with other new members, industry leaders and NMHC staff, including an online orientation for new members and special gatherings for program participants.
What is expected of participants in the NMHC Membership Development Program?
Companies and organizations that accept our invitation to join the 2024 Membership Development Program will be expected to:
- Attend a new member orientation within six months of your approval.
- Attend at least one in-person NMHC event during each year of your two-year complimentary membership.
- Meet with your member Ambassador, virtually or in person, at least once each calendar quarter throughout your two-year complimentary membership.
- Provide feedback about your experience to the NMHC staff team during the program period on an annual basis.
