2025 Emerging Leader Committee Applications are now closed. All committee candidates will hear back shortly.
Founded in 2011, NMHC’s Emerging Leaders Group was formed to cultivate future leaders in the apartment industry. The program creates opportunities for the industry’s next generation of leaders to develop their peer networks and learn from top industry leaders.
The 2024 Emerging Leaders Committee leaders are: Chair: Peter Herbst (Berkshire Residential Investments) and Vice Chairs: Courtney Crowder (Newmark) and Dan Campbell (UDR). Find the full committee here.
Who Can Participate?
NMHC’s Emerging Leaders events – the Speaker Series programs and Committee Meetings – are open to all employees of NMHC member firms who are 40 or under and have five or more years of experience.

How Can I Participate?
The first level of participation is to attend our events. We host four Regional Speakers Series events each year, and we gather as a committee three times a year at NMHC’s Membership Meetings (Annual Meeting, Spring Board Meeting, Fall Meeting).
You must register to attend the Speaker Series events (check NMHC’s Upcoming Meetings Calendar), but the committee meetings are open to anyone attending NMHC’s membership meetings.
(The Regional Speaker Series events are planned throughout the year. Signing up for the NMHC Emerging Leaders database is the best way to stay informed.)
How Can I Join the Emerging Leaders Committee?
The Emerging Leaders Committee is comprised of 18-20 committee members as well as a Supplier’s Liaison and a Student Housing Liaison.
Committee members and the Student Housing Liaison serve a three-year term; the Supplier Liaison serve a one-year term.
Each January, six to seven committee members rotate off the committee and six to seven new members rotate on.
Members interested in joining the committee are encouraged to participate in Emerging Leaders events (Speaker Series and Committee Members). That is the best way to not only indicate interest and ability to participate, but also to understand how the program works and how you might be able to contribute.
New committee members are chosen based on past participation with an eye to diversity of gender, ethnicity, geography, type of firm (owner, developer, manager, lender, broker, etc) and role within the firm (transactions, operations, marketing, etc).
If you have been an active participant in the program and would like to submit your name for consideration, please reach out to Latoya Lovick in early October.

Emerging Leader PAC Program
NMHC PAC is the premier fund aggressively pursuing the election and re-election of elected officials who work to improve, preserve and promote the multifamily industry. The NMHC PAC ensures the multifamily industry can have a direct impact on the policies that affect how your company operates and how successful they can be.
NMHC’s Emerging Leaders have always been an important part of NMHC PAC. In 2019, NMHC created the Emerging PAC Leaders program to recognize the contributions of the NMHC Emerging Leaders. Any under-40 employee of an NMHC member firm who contributes to the PAC will automatically be added to the program and will benefit from special recognition and unique opportunities.
