Welcome to NMHC’s Housing Help Hub
Nearly 40 million Americans are building their lives in multifamily apartment homes. The firms that provide those homes know housing is foundational to a resident’s life and are committed to supporting the health and financial stability of their residents.
This hub seeks to provide resources for renters and housing providers with resources to continually improve the experience of living in rental housing.
Foundations for Rental Housing
America’s multifamily rental housing providers strive to provide quality housing and customer experience to millions of residents across the country. We provide a wide range of housing options that serve households at multiple price points.
Housing providers are committed to following Foundations for Rental Housing outlined. These Foundations provide a threshold for professionally managed multifamily properties. Each housing provider implements these principles based on the type of housing provided, the resident community, state and local laws and other factors.
- Engage with residents to foster an atmosphere of mutual respect, trust and communication
- Have procedures in place to respond to resident requests
- Comply with all applicable anti-discrimination, fair housing and fair credit laws
- Support residents who express an interest in enhancing their credit through rent payment reporting
- Respond to requests from residents facing financial hardship who are seeking external resources
- Rights and responsibilities of lease holder and housing providers will be contained in the lease documents
Our Resources Advancing Equity, Affordability and Diversity
The Housing Equity Guide

Housing Affordability Toolkit
Housing stakeholders must be prepared to evaluate their housing market and effectively advocate for local housing policies in diverse communities across the nation. The Housing Affordability Toolkit helps guide discussions regarding housing affordability policies, tools, and incentives.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Toolkit
Cultivating an organizational culture that prioritizes diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is a strategic imperative for innovation and success. NMHC members have asked for resources to support their DEI goals, and, in response, NMHC offers this toolkit to meet apartment firms where they are.
Supplier Diversity Initiative
NMHC has launched a supplier diversity initiative, in conjunction with an alliance of national trade associations, to help its members expand their spending with Minority and Women-owned Business Enterprises (MBWEs). This includes contractors, consultants, joint venture partners, vendors and more.
